La tecnologia DAT e' basata sulla registrazione di tipo digitale, e consente di memorizzare fino a 24 Gb (in modalita' compressione dati abilitata) in un'unica cassetta. L'interfaccia Fast SCSI2 (che necessita di un apposito controller Fast SCSI2 o superiore) consente velocita' ancora superiori rispetto ai precedenti modelli, essendo in grado di arrivare fino a 2,4 Mb/sec di transfer rate massimo, sfruttando un buffer di 2 Mbyte.
